A Cherished Tradition   2 comments

The Bridal shower was said to have taken place in Holland when a young girl fell in love with a poor, but generous miller.  Over the years the miller had given away all his possessions to those needier than himself.  So, when the time came to wed, he had nothing left to offer his prospective bride.

Furious with his daughter’s choice of suitors, her father forbade the marriage and refused the young pair the customary dowry, which was necessary to establish a household.  Without it, the pair had little hope of being able to begin a life together.  It was then that the community came to the couple’s rescue.  Out of appreciation for the miller’s benevolence, his friends banded together and literally “showered” the young girl with all the items necessary to set up a house.  It was the beginning of a long marriage and a beautiful tradition.
